How to prepare the gourd for use?
The gourd, or calabash, is nowadays an integral part of serving the yerba mate drink in the traditional way. However, it is necessary to properly prepare the gourd before the first use, as the container still contains remnants of dried pulp. The preparation of the gourd is called "Currado" (seasoning of the gourd), which means thoroughly cleaning the inside of the calabash.
Instructions:
Fill the gourd one-third full with dry yerba mate.
Pour water at a temperature of 70 to 80 degrees Celsius to the brim of the container.
Let it stand for 24 hours.
Then thoroughly wash the gourd under running water.
Scrape out the remaining pulp.
Fill the gourd one-third full with fresh yerba mate again and pour water at 80 degrees Celsius.
Let the container stand for another 24 hours.
After 24 hours, thoroughly wash the gourd again.
And that's it, now you can prepare your first yerba mate.
