Pajarito
Since 1956 Pajarito has been producing Yerba Mate, by caring for the taste, the processes and the environment. With a tireless pursuit for excellence they mark history with a 100% national product, they export and take Paraguayan culture around the world. In 1956 Don Gustavo Raatz with his son Lauro Raatz and his wife Mrs. Sara Ulbrich started the great adventure of the green gold. The yerba canchada (aged and dried), produced in a hand-powered dryer, was sold in bulk in a small pantry where they also sold candy to children from the school across the street. In 1958, hand-packing began in small brown paper bags stamped with red ink. Twenty-five women, headed by Doña Sara herself, were in charge of packaging. In 1970 the first packaging machine was ordered, and the following year the new packaging appeared, in white paper with red and blue colors and the logo of a little bird. It was still hand-packed. In October 1985, Yerba Pajarito took a qualitative leap when it started exporting. The first destination was Taiwan with the product packed in wooden crates. The next export was to the Mennonite community in Canada. In 1988 yerba mate Pajarito acquired a tea bag packaging machine and became the first Paraguayan company to commercialize yerba mate in tea bags.
The company continued to grow and on October 23, 1993, it was incorporated as a corporation. That same year a new, very modern barbacuá or drying shed was built, with more physical space. In response to the increased demand, the company went from being a producer to a warehouse for green leaf and aging. In 1995 the company inaugurated its new building and industrial infrastructure with important innovations in high-tech equipment and machinery. In 1996 they began to produce yerba mate made with aromatic herbs, which today uses only national herbs. Then it produced flavored yerba mate. In its constant evolution, Yerba Mate Pajarito launched in 1998 the soluble instant mate cocido.
In the year 2000 this process led Mr. Lauro Raatz to receive the award of the Association of Christian Entrepreneurs, ADEC, as the best entrepreneur of the moment. That same year, the company participated in the World Expo in Hannover, Germany. And in 2001 it exported soluble yerba mate in bottles to the demanding Japanese market. In 2005 yerba mate Pajarito was awarded as a leading company in its field by «The Bizz Awards» in Houston, Texas. In order to strengthen its international presence, in 2007 the company participated in the World Food Expo held in Taiwan. In 2010, soluble yerba mate with stevia was launched, specially for diabetics and people with celiacs. Another great novelty of Pajarito was the Mate Cocido tea to be prepared in coffee makers, ideal for offices. As part of its constant innovation, the company started planting organic yerba mate in 2003. And in July 2012, at the Mariano Roque Alonso expo, it presented its new 100% organic yerba mate.
For education and promotion of our beloved product, in 2013 a mobile facility was created and named «La Yerbatería de Pajarito». In it, consumers can taste yerba mate in different forms: ice mate, ice cream, yerba mate-based drinks and the boiler for serving yerba mate with or without milk. Pajarito started in a humble store, selling yerba in bulk and then 300 packets a day with hand-packaging. Today it produces 15,000 packages a day and is a source of honest employment. Its name, suggested by a yerba mate worker, is a source of national pride!
